FAQs

The short answer: Every manuscript of book length needs a copyeditor at some point before publication. Even the most experienced writers (myself included!) can benefit from having an expert review their work.
Copyeditors handle the crucial mechanical edits (e.g., spelling, punctuation, treatment of special elements) that ensure clarity and readability. We also edit for language, correcting errors in grammar, diction, and usage. Depending on the level of copyediting requested by the author or publisher, we may take on more intensive edits to content as well.
For some authors, copyediting comes before submitting the manuscript to potential agents or developmental editors. For others, it comes later in the process, such as through the publisher once the book is under contract.

I come from a content marketing background, with eight years of experience writing and editing across a number of industries. I specialize in explaining complex topics in language that is both understandable and engaging to a wide readership—from absolute novices to seasoned experts. This is the perfect basis for book copyediting, as large brands require their writers to be extremely attentive to detail.
Outside of my work with businesses, I'm also an avid reader, typically devouring between 80 and 100 books each year across a wide range of genres. I believe authors to be some of the most impressive and fascinating people one can work with, and through my own reading, I came to realize how my editing skills can translate to helping authors perfect their prose.

When working with a traditional publisher, I follow the house style provided. In cases where no preference is given, I default to using The Chicago Manual of Style.

The speed of copyediting depends on a number of factors: the length of the manuscript, how "clean" it is (i.e., whether the author already fixed some simple mistakes), and what level of copyediting is being requested (light, medium, or heavy).
Speed also depends on how much of my availability has already been booked out by other clients. I recommend getting in touch with me as soon as you know you need a copyeditor to ensure I can slot your manuscript in my calendar.
